A new data protection bill has been a necessity since GDPR was first announced, in order to bring Ireland’s laws in line with the overarching EU regulation. That bill has been in the works since in all EU member states, including Ireland, on 25 May 2018. It replaces all EU member state general data protection rules. With some exceptions, the GDPR will operate as the new single data protection law for the EU. It is designed to give greater certainty to organisations in navigating and complying with data protection In Ireland, a new Data Protection Act was also enacted in May 2018 to supplement the GDPR by filling in sections of the Regulation that are left to individual member states to interpret and implement, and applying its provisions – or at least a “broadly similar regime” – to certain areas outside the GDPR’s scope.
